Man stands and speaks into a microphone
A discourse that I belong to is the speech and debate community. The different words, phrases, and gestures are formal and direct. There is a certain level of vocabulary required, almost like a dress code. They are unique in that if you used some of the phrases and techniques outside the podium it would seem odd or out of place. The norms inside the walls of the debate are not transitive outside of them. I came into debate my freshman year of high school, my former coach met me and knew I was good at public speaking. She taught me everything I know not only about the spoken word but the written one as well.
