The act of writing is the communication of mankind through written characters symbols and words, it’s a form of communication used as early as Egyptian calligraphy. It not only is a form of communication that has been around for ages but is also a form of art. Writers use their creativity and artistic expression to create masterpieces. Instead of a paintbrush, it’s a pen in which to write books, articles, and letters that have the power to change history. Writing is a skill that takes a moment to learn but a lifetime to perfect. When a child learns to write they begin a journey through their writing career, however, it is a skill that is never truly perfected. Writers spend their lifetimes perfecting their skill but still find criticisms in their own works. Thus the phrase a moment to learn, but a lifetime to perfect My grandfather is an author and was the person who taught me that phrase. He instilled in me that reading and writing was the most important thing in life. He taught me that learning to read and write was the key to most if not all other aspects of life. As a former submariner for the navy with a Ph.D. in educational administration one would think that my grandfather's story was one of high education. In reality, he learned to read in 6th grade, he spent most of his time in school in the garden as teachers who had him deemed him illiterate. He spent his life devoted to education, learning anything that he could because he simply longed to know more. Edward Jones swung for the fences when everyone expected him to fail, he is an inspiration for me to progress in my own education every day. Unlike my grandfather, I learned to write as many others did. I learned from my parents and then progressed in my skills at school. When I truly learned to write was through speech and debate in high school. This was instrumental in my ability to write fluently, efficiently, and effectively. Writing debate cases fine-tuned my skills under the critique of my English teacher and coach Ms. Jackson. She was a true inspiration to work harder to achieve goals in my writing and build on those abilities. The key point of writing is to get your point across, to be able to communicate to your audience in an entertaining and informative way. In the course mastery what matched up most was the stress of literacy as a skill, and I certainly believe writing is a critical skill that is vital to learn. A lack of literacy can not only statistically lead to a lower quality of life putting one at a disadvantage, for example, a lack of job opportunities because one cannot write a resume. But also missing out on such a beautiful form of expression in life is the true cost if one were to not learn to write.
